Critical Mass Ride Takes Brooklyn, Manhattan Bridges New York's monthly Critical Mass protest bike ride was held again on Friday night, with at least two hundred-fifty riders in attendance. According to one account, the police had an organized presence this time, with around two dozen officers arriving within minutes of the ride's start. Last month's ride also received increased attention from the NYPD.

The ride took cyclists downtown, through Manhattan's financial district, over the Brooklyn bridge, and back to Chinatown via the Manhattan bridge. One rider was reportedly struck by a car, resulting in the police issuing the cyclist a citation for blocking traffic and no charges for the driver.

On the Brooklyn side of the Manhattan bridge, police arrested a photojournalist [Name deleted on request], a freelancer for Polish newspapers. According to accounts of ride participants, [he] had pulled up to photograph the scene, as police blocked entrances to the bridge.

[He] is scheduled to be arraigned Saturday afternoon, reportedly on charges of felony assault on an officer and resisting arrest. Arraignment will take place in Brooklyn Criminal Court, at 120 Schermerhorn Street, Arraignment Section. Jail solidarity is requested, and witnesses from the ride are requested to contact National Lawyers Guild attorney Joel Kupferman at 917-414-1983.

RMS, 2009: The victim of this unjust arrest asked me to delete his name, saying that clients have refused to do business with him because they think he is a criminal. Shame on them — and shame on America for having citizens inclined to criticize a journalist for being freedom's point man.
